It’s no secret that Peru is home to some of the most amazing wildlife the world has to offer. Over 53 natural protected áreas results in Peru having some of the greatest biodiversity in the world. This is because it sustains many varied hábitats; the Pacific ocean, mangrove forests, the Amazon Rainforest, the Attacama desert, The Andes Mountains etc. With access to the largest tropical forest in the world (The amazon rainforest is 5.5 million km2 which equates to over 30% of the South American continent), the north of Peru is one of the few remaining places where experiencing the most bio-diverse and successful habitat on the planet is still possible. Sacharuna’s mission is to be a responsible tourism company that takes travelers on unforgettable experiences without damaging the local surroundings for wildlife and indigenous people alike. With that in mind, we can offer the following tours.
Located in Yurimaguas, we have to journey by car from the city of Tarapoto for approximately 2-hours. Then by boat another 4-5 hours before we reach the reserve. This is one of Sacharuna’s most popular tours as sighting incredible wildlife is virtually guaranteed.
The animals that travelers can expect to see include pink and grey Amazon River dolphins, monkeys, sloths, alligators, chamelions and large numbers of incredible birds such as toucans, parrots and eagles. Click on the link below to view the full itinerary of this trip.
In the North of peru, the tropical pacific coast is one of the best places to go whale watching. Every year, cetaceans (sea mammals) migrate from the Antarctic to breed and raise their calves in warmer waters. More than 30 different species of whales and dolphins have been recorded in Peru with the magnificent Humpack Whale being particularly successful. These are some of the worlds largest animals and through July to October they can be spotted jumping clear of the wáter in spectacular arial displays.
But its not just whales, you can also encounter sea turtles, dolphins, sea lions and many incredible sea birds such as the blue footed boobie and magnificent frigatebird.
At Sacharuna, we recommend doing whale watching as part of a 6 day tour that also explores northern Peru’s pre-Inca history. Click on the link below to learn more about this experience
